Cumbria has roughly a dozen web design agencies plus a handful of strong solo designers, and the right one depends on what you are building. For charities, public sector and B Corp-minded organisations, Designworks in Kendal stands out. For large bespoke systems and integrations, BFI in Milnthorpe and Ibex Creative in Kendal have the deepest technical scope. For established brands and ecommerce, including international builds, our own studio, Digital Otter, covers the broadest platform range in the county, from Shopify and Next.js to custom WordPress. On the tightest budgets, Greystoke Web Design publishes builds from £500.

Who wrote this, and why you should be sceptical: this guide is written by Digital Otter, a Kendal web design agency that appears in it. We have kept it honest the only way that works: every fact about every other agency is taken from that agency's own website and linked, we use "not stated" rather than guessing, our own profile uses the identical template and length as everyone else's, and there is a full section below on when you should choose someone else instead of us. If you run one of these agencies and something is out of date, email [email protected] and we will correct it within days.

Who Are the Best Web Design Agencies in Cumbria?
Cumbria's web design market clusters into four areas: Kendal and the South Lakes (by far the densest, with eight providers), Penrith and Eden, Carlisle, and Barrow-in-Furness. West Cumbria has almost no dedicated design agencies.
"Best" depends entirely on the job. BFI has been trading since 1996 and lists national clients including the NHS, Trek and Vision Express, which makes it the obvious shortlist for large bespoke systems. Designworks is the only B Corp certified web agency we could identify in the county, with clients including Westmorland & Furness Council and Lancaster University. For ecommerce and platforms beyond WordPress, the choice narrows quickly, which we cover in the platform section below. On small budgets, the solo designers around Penrith and Carlisle deliver honest work at prices the agencies cannot match.
Web Design Agencies in Kendal and the South Lakes
BFI (Big Fish Internet)
BFI is a Milnthorpe-based web development agency specialising in bespoke systems and larger commercial builds.
- Founded: trading since 1996, the longest-established in the South Lakes
- Based in: Shoreline Business Park, Sandside, Milnthorpe
- Notable clients: NHS, Trek, Vision Express (per their site)
- Standout strength: genuine development depth for projects that outgrow a standard CMS build
Designworks
Designworks is a Kendal-based web design and branding agency focused on charities, the public sector and ethical SMEs.
- Founded: 2007
- Based in: Kendal Business Hub, Highgate, Kendal
- Platforms: WordPress, with green UK hosting
- Notable clients: Westmorland & Furness Council, Lancaster University, NHS trust work (per their site)
- Standout strength: the only B Corp certified web agency we found in Cumbria (certified 2026), with a values-led client base to match
Digital Otter
Digital Otter is a Kendal-based web design and development studio run by its two founders, specialising in ecommerce and bespoke builds for established brands.
- Founded: 2023
- Based in: Kendal
- Platforms: Shopify, WordPress, Next.js, Webflow, Framer and Wix, the broadest range profiled in this guide
- Notable clients: Town Talk Polish (international Shopify ecommerce for a heritage brand established 1895), Grain Over Sands, MRA Research, Blackpool Central Apartments; current work includes an international WordPress multisite build for an established UK publishing group, spanning UK and EU editions
- How they work: both founders on every project from discovery to post-launch, with unlimited revisions during the build; AI-search optimisation (AEO) included as standard. Recent work includes taking over, securing and re-hosting sites for established businesses whose previous developer was no longer available
- Standout strength: senior, direct delivery for businesses that have outgrown their website, with modern-stack and international capability that is rare in the county
Freshspace
Freshspace is a Kendal-based, owner-led WordPress studio with an unusual specialism in rescuing and recovering problem websites.
- Founded: 2015, run by Eilidh and Darren Nicholls
- Based in: Kendal
- Platforms: WordPress, with green hosting
- Notable clients: McKinney Vets, The Farmer Network (per their site)
- Standout strength: website rescue. If a previous build has gone wrong, this is a niche almost nobody else in the county advertises
Ibex Creative
Ibex Creative is a Kendal-based full-service web agency with the broadest technical scope in the town.
- Founded: 2004 (per their LinkedIn page)
- Based in: Pixel Mill Business Centre, Appleby Road, Kendal
- Specialisms: booking websites, online portals, mobile apps and business systems alongside standard sites
- Notable clients: Age UK, University of Manchester, the Beatrix Potter Attraction (per their site)
- Standout strength: technical range. With BFI, the natural shortlist when a project is really a system, not a website
Mintcake Digital
Mintcake Digital is a Kendal-based agency pairing web design with a full ongoing marketing stack: SEO, paid ads, social and content.
- Founded: underlying company registered 2004
- Based in: Stramongate, Kendal
- Notable clients: Calvert Trust, Bendrigg Trust, RSPCA Westmorland (per their site)
- Standout strength: one team for the build and the marketing that follows it, with a visible charity and outdoor-sector thread
No Bull Marketing & Web Design
No Bull is a Kendal town-centre studio combining web design, graphic design and marketing with ongoing website management, photography and SEO.
- Founded: incorporated 2022 (Companies House)
- Based in: Branthwaite Brow, Kendal
- Team: Keiron (15+ years in design and marketing) and Jamie, plus Rupert the office dog
- Notable clients: The Plastic Centre (Barrow), Pickering Scaffolding, Movezy, Herdwick Construction (per their site)
- Standout strength: the straight-talking, small-business positioning its name promises, backed by a 5.0 Google rating, with trees planted via Ecologi for each new site
Scratch Creative
Scratch Creative is a Kendal-based, design-first studio covering branding, web, print and packaging.
- Founded: incorporated 2011 (Companies House)
- Based in: Beezon Road, Kendal
- Specialisms: hospitality and food & drink brands, including London restaurant group work
- Standout strength: brand design pedigree. If the brief starts with identity and packaging rather than the website, this is the strongest design-led option in town
Web Design Agencies in Penrith and Eden
We are Reeds is a Penrith-based multi-discipline design house, with a second studio in Carlisle, covering print, signage, brand and web. The business carries 140 years of printing heritage, builds on Craft CMS (rare in the county), and lists a heavyweight roster including the National Trust, Theatre by the Lake and Cumbria Tourism. For established organisations that need brand, print and web held together by one team, Reeds is the strongest option in the north of the county.
Penrith is also home to several strong solo designers, covered in the freelancer section below.
Web Design Agencies in Carlisle
Carlisle's market is smaller than Kendal's and skews toward trades and professional services.
Light Bulb Web Design is a Carlisle-based studio building bespoke, no-template websites for professional services firms, with a visible niche in legal, accountancy and veterinary practices plus schools and academies. Registered in 2017, it keeps copywriting and photography in-house.
4D Web Design is a Carlisle-based provider combining web design with IT managed services, claiming more than 20 years' experience and showing around 40 local projects. For trades and small firms that want one supplier for the website and the IT, that pairing is the draw.
Web Design Agencies in Barrow and Furness
Furness Media is a Barrow-in-Furness agency with heritage back to 1996 through the Furness Internet Group, a Google Partner badge, and a full local marketing stack. It effectively owns the under-served Barrow and Ulverston end of the county. West Cumbria, by contrast, has almost no dedicated design agencies; businesses there typically work with Carlisle or South Lakes studios.
How Much Does Web Design Cost in Cumbria?
The Cumbrian market is overwhelmingly quote-based. Only two providers publish web design numbers: Greystoke Web Design (builds from £500, support from £55 per month, SEO at £40 per hour) and Sam King (roughly £1,000 to £5,000+ per site). As a working rule, expect £2,500 to £6,000 for a properly built custom small business site from a Cumbrian agency, and notably less from the solo designers for simpler briefs.
The biggest pricing differences in Cumbria come from scope, not from the agency's address. A five page brochure site and a site with bookings or ecommerce are completely different projects, and two quotes only look comparable when the scope is vague. Before you compare numbers, ask each agency exactly what is included.
- Miles Debinski, Co-Founder & Technical Lead at Digital Otter

Which Cumbria Agency Is Best for Ecommerce or Shopify?
WordPress dominates Cumbria: most agencies in this guide build on it, and for content-led brochure sites it is a sound default with plenty of capable local hands. The exceptions matter when your project is not a brochure site. We are Reeds builds on Craft CMS, BFI and Ibex Creative develop bespoke systems, and Digital Otter is the only provider profiled here listing Shopify, Next.js, Webflow and Framer alongside WordPress. We work across the full WordPress range too, from straightforward brochure sites to custom builds, integrations, and international multisite projects spanning multiple regions.
Which Agency Should Lake District Tourism Businesses Choose?
Tourism is the county's defining sector and several providers specialise in it. Core Media Design in Penrith has focused on tourism and hospitality websites since 2006. Creative Essence shows hospitality work including Storrs Hall and Lindeth Fell. Freshspace maintains a dedicated Lake District page, Ibex built for the Beatrix Potter Attraction, and We are Reeds lists Cumbria Tourism itself. The deciding question for tourism businesses is usually direct bookings; we wrote a separate guide on how Lake District tourism businesses can drive more direct bookings that applies whichever provider you choose.
What About Freelancers and Solo Designers?
For simple sites and small budgets, Cumbria's solo designers are genuinely good value, with the trade-off being capacity: one person, one pipeline, holidays and illness included.
- Core Media Design, Penrith. Solo since 2006, tourism and hospitality specialist, owner-direct with no handoffs, and states a 5.0 Google rating.
- Creative Essence, Kendal. Solo brand-and-web studio with a strong hospitality portfolio (Storrs Hall, Lindeth Fell, Steam Coniston).
- Greystoke Web Design, Penrith area. Affordable WordPress with the rarest thing in the county: published pricing, from £500 per build, with green hosting.
- Matt Booth, Brampton. Affordable web design bundled with local SEO and Google Business Profile management, available evenings and weekends.
- Sam King, Penrith. WordPress/Elementor designer with published pricing around £1,000 to £5,000+; note that per his own site he is currently working remotely while travelling.
How Do You Choose Between Them?
Five things separate the right choice from an expensive mistake: whether the portfolio shows businesses like yours, whether SEO and performance are treated as foundations or extras, whether you will own everything when the project ends, who you will speak to day to day, and what happens after launch.
Judging an agency on how their portfolio looks, or on the names in it, tells you surprisingly little. Ask what each website did for the client after launch: more enquiries, more bookings, more sales. Agencies that measure results will talk about them readily, and the ones that cannot answer are telling you what they prioritise.
- Emma Smyth, Co-Founder & Creative Lead at Digital Otter
We have written two deeper guides on this: how to choose a web designer in Kendal and 15 questions to ask a web design agency.
When Should You NOT Choose Digital Otter?
The honest section. We are two founders, which is a strength for direct work and a limitation for some briefs:
- B Corp or public-sector procurement track record matters: choose Designworks, whose certification and council, university and NHS work are exactly that evidence.
- Software rather than a website - portals, mobile apps, internal systems: BFI and Ibex Creative have longer track records building software products.
- Print, signage and multi-channel brand programmes: We are Reeds or Scratch Creative hold those threads together better than a web-first studio.
- The tightest budgets: Greystoke, Matt Booth or Sam King will serve you honestly for less.
- Your procurement process requires a large team: some tenders score headcount; BFI or Designworks fit that requirement better. Two founders means senior attention on every project; it also means we cap how many projects we take at a time.
What we are right for: established businesses that have outgrown their website, ecommerce that needs to convert, and international and multi-region builds.
Who We Left Out, and Why
To keep this guide trustworthy, we only profiled providers we could verify from their own websites in June 2026:
- SEO-only consultancies are out of scope: this guide compares web design providers.
- Out-of-area operators running "web design Cumbria" landing pages with no Cumbrian premises (among others, Nicada Digital and Advansys) are excluded: this guide is for businesses that want a genuinely local provider.
- Unverifiable sites: a small number of locally listed providers were unreachable or could not be verified when we checked (including Dog Eared Designs and Lunesdale Web Design); we would rather omit than guess, and we will re-check at the next refresh.
- Directory-only names: several names appear in automated directories for which we could find no current independent record. Some published "top Cumbria agency" lists also include businesses we could find no record of at all, which says more about how those lists are generated than about Cumbria.
If we have missed a genuine Cumbrian web design business, or any fact above needs correcting, email [email protected] and we will put it right.
